Name: Antarctic krill (Leuchtgarnele, Walkrebs)

Scientific name: Euphausia superba

Details: rake setae at the end of the thoracopod used to scrape off microalgae from the ice

Status:light microscopy on freshly killed animal 1981 off Antarctic Penninsula

Special: three types of setae visible:

• a: to the left the filter setae (1st degree) with V shaped 2nd degree setae forming the large filtration area
• b: to the upper right two comb setae, used to swipe and reorganise the filter setae of the anterior thoracopod during the outstroke
• c: downwards the very strong rake seatae used to scrach off the icealgae
