Antarctic krill Euphausia superba filter of thoracopods

image-bank FOTO KILS

Name: Antarctic krill - filter of thoracopods

Scientific name: Euphausia superba

Details: This is an image taken from an exuviae, the skin left behind after molting, from an animal kept in aquaria during molting experiments of Gotthilf Hempel. Even the most delicate structures and setae are reproduced this thin chitin structure, which is nearely invisible in the water. Special high speed illumination and optical plus digital filtering make the minute structures light up in this image

Special: one of the most remarkable filters ever built on this planet to hunt for even the tinyest partticles and plankton-organisms (mesh-openings down to 2 micron) - in the winter theis structure is capable of harvesting ice algae from under the icebergs with rake-like structures (at the very tip of the filtering-legs)

Status: onboard fisheries research vessel FFS "Walther Herwig" Antarctic Expedition 1977

Dynamic: function of the filtering basket during pumping, towing and ice scraping soon as videos on this server, interactive CD under planning
